...and she didn't say "Let's progress, America!" No, no...she wants to progress our nation. Progressing America is at the top of her list. Has anyone ever heard "progress" used as a transitive verb? It wasn't just a slip of the tongue...she used it over and over again in a single interview. Let's thank sweet Jesus that we won't have to listen to this woman for the next four (or eight) years. Ugh. And then there's the "n" word (no, not THE "N" word)...nuculear. *Sigh*

I heard plenty of Obama-isms during the primaries, particularly when he didn't have a teleprompter in front of him. McCain produced some choice "isms" as well. Hillary Clinton seemed to have a firm grasp on grammar most of the time, but even she slipped occassionally. I voted for Obama, but I'm not about to jump on the sexist, media driven "destroy-Palin" band wagon. Nor am I going to sit back and remain silent when I see others doing so. Being a woman doesn't grant instant immunity for sexist behavior.

    Leave off already.

My belief is that in most cases it is simply a matter of being in the spotlight and being constantly observed by the world. It is one thing to prepare a speech and stand up to say the words. It is another to have cameras in one's face at all moments to record any errors.

Think about it. In everyday life, most of us make a slip or two along the way. The difference is that it is not being recorded and blasted across the media for days and days. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to have that kind of attention and lack of private time.

As far as pronunciation, a good part of that may simply be the result of local dialect where the speaker was raised. The phrases and words that are technically improper grammar may just be an attempt to create a new catch-phrase.

I just try to be fair in evaluating the intention and whether the error represents a consistent language problem or not. One or two misproununciations or odd words do not necessarily mean the speaker is an idiot. Thinking about it further, a deficiency in language ability does not even mean that one is incompetent in other areas. I think I mentioned another post with my dyslexic brother. His language skills are dreadful, but he is a genius in many other fields.

Heather, as usual, makes good points. Considering that Bush was equally made fun of in the same way, it doesn't particularly read as sexist to make fun of Palin's speech to me (it's just an extension of people making fun of Bush's slurred and drunken faux pas). I also don't think it's unreasonable to expect a certain level of eloquence and ability to speak clearly of a politician of any gender. Their job is about about representing a nation and communicating - not just public speeches to their own citizens but also foreign heads of state - so not being able to communicate well does tend to mean they're lacking a requisite skill for the job. Internationally at least, the US is much better served by an eloquent and obviously thoughtful representative like Obama. Politicians aren't just everyday people, they've worked and aspired to the position they're in (even the ones who inherited the presidency), they have speech writers and people who groom their public image and they've consciously chosen to give up their privacy in return for power. Going into public office means becoming a public figure, it's a choice that entails giving up being a private citizen and every politician knows that (and many crave the attention) so I don't see politicians as being like the average person and a private citizen for these reasons.

Is it sexist to point out that Palin said some ridiculous things on a fairly regular basis and used grammar, syntax and diction in a way that indicated that she either did not think very carefully about what she was saying or was incapable of doing so in an intelligent manner?

Was it sexist to point out that Dubya often mangled the English tongue -- or that he was equally inarticulate in Spanish whenever he attempted to use it?

I notice everybody jumped on Joe Biden's case when he said FDR had announced in a televised address that he was closing the nation's banks during the depression. How is it Biden can be criticized for making an ignorant statement that shows he doesn't know the history of the nation he has sworn to serve but Palin can't be criticized for the equally stupid things she says?

Is a woman who seeks high office who comports herself like an imbecile exempt from being called for it? Sounds like special pleading to me.
