I'm envisioning that it will be a library that bans and burns books deemed "inappropriate" - more a propaganda front that an actual collection of knowledge and learning - but then I'm cynical about Bush's love of books, learning or equal access to knowledge.

Re: Bush threatens to open library!
Mon, November 24, 2008 - 8:25 AMHeather - I just realized this may be a partisan thing to post! Sorry about that - if people prefer I delete this thread let me know and I will. I was just taken aback at the idea that someone who seems to so wantonly destroy the English language, and actually dislike reading and knowledge, wants to open a library to glorify himself! -

Re: Bush threatens to open library!
Tue, November 25, 2008 - 7:58 PMThose presidential libraries rarely contain actual books except those that have been written about the president whose name the library bears. They are usually repositories for the official papers that past presidents accrued while in office. Their primary value is to political scholars and historians, not bibliophiles or even Bas Bleu catalog aficionados ... -

Wed, November 26, 2008 - 8:50 AMMaybe out in the courtyard tending the book burning and bbq pit? Talk about eating one's words! (Yes, yes, I do deserve to be punished for that and should have at least left it dangling as bait for someone else!)

Having said that, however, I wonder why such impressive structures are always required. Must be some sort of edifice complex.
I don't really care, however, so long as they are not built with public funds.... -

Re: Bush threatens to open library!
Fri, November 28, 2008 - 7:46 AMSorry again, but this showed up in my Inbox, and it's too much of a coincidence to be ignored. (Some clever wordplay, so it's sort of on-topic. As for the quotes- this tribe isn't "Lexical Adepts", it's "Lexical Elitists", and what's the point of elitism if you can't be smug about being better than other people?:))
"Dear Fellow Constituent:
The George W Bush Presidential Library is now in the planning stages and accepting donations.
The Library will include:
The Hurricane Katrina Room, which is still under construction.
The Alberto Gonzales Room, where you won't be able to remember anything.
The Texas Air National Guard Room, where you don't even have to show up.
The Walter Reed Hospital Room, where they don't let you in.
The Guantanamo Bay Room, where they don't let you out.
The Weapons of Mass Destruction Room, which no one has been able to find.
The National Debt Room, which is huge and has no ceiling.
The Tax Cut Room, with entry only to the wealthy.
The Economy Room, which is in the toilet.
The Iraq War Room. (After you complete your first visit, they make you to go back for a second, third, fourth, and sometimes fifth visit.)
The Dick Cheney Room, in the famous undisclosed location, complete with shotgun gallery.
The Environmental Conservation Room, still empty.
The Supreme Gift Shop, where you can buy an election.
The Airport Men's Room, where you can meet some of your favorite Republican Senators. The Decider Room, complete with dart board, magic 8-ball, Ouija board, dice, coins, and straws.
Note: The library will feature an electron microscope to help you locate and view the President's accomplishments. The library will also include many famous Quotes by George W. Bush:
'The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country.'
'If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.'
'Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child.'
'No senior citizen should ever have to choose between prescription drugs and medicine.'
'I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy - but that could change.'
'One word sums up probably the responsibility of any Governor, and that one word is 'to be prepared'.'
'Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things.'
'I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future.'
'The future will be better tomorrow.'
'We're going to have the best educated American people in the world.'
'One of the great things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures.' (during an education photo-op)
'Illegitimacy is something we should talk about in terms of not having it.'
'We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not occur.'
'It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.'
'I stand by all the misstatements that I've made.'...George W. Bush to Sam Donaldson
PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY!
Sincerely,
Jack Abramoff,
Co-Chair
G.W. Bush Library Board of Directors " -

Fri, November 28, 2008 - 7:57 AMI'm afraid that almost all those quotes are misattributed ( irregulartimes.com/lie.html ): 'twas Qualye who done it.
(gems like these require a modicum of vocabulary; grammar and content are clearly optional)

Fri, November 28, 2008 - 11:08 AMBill, I think we can safely say that ALL presidents are size queens when it comes to ego - you kind of have to be to want to rule the free world. -

Sad but true. Was not always so. Lincoln said:
"If it were not for the honor of the thing, I would rather be ridden out of town on a rail."

Or, in the case of the semi-recumbent incumbent, to muddle it up properly.
