Driving home today, I saw a sign in front of a restaurant advertising, "Shishka Bobs."

At a restaurant we used to visit for Saturday morning breakfasts, they offered their version of huevos rancheros with "spicy salsa sauce."

A restaurant in Berkeley has a sign outside saying:

**We proudly serve "wine" and "margaritas." **

Make me wonder what's really in those bottle & pitchers . . .

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge. Say no more! I can even picture the implied eyebrow wiggling.

Restaurants are often challenged when confronting foreign words, French in particular, coming up with approximations which for native speakers are either meaningless, or worse, have a totally different meaning, such as Crêpes Suzette [spelled Crep], or Coupe Belle Hélène [spelled Coup] (but the French are just as bad: Rosbif instead of roast beef).

Really feeble attempts, up there ^^^^ , michael.

Better go to the pro's : I just stumbled across this link in the literary nerds tribe, and found it to be particularily appropriate for this tribe as well. In the context of the restaurant mis-spelling topic, it immediately raised the bar by introducing mangled Italian delicacies instead of French: Chicken Catchitori (for Cacciatore : eggcorns.lascribe.net/categor...anguage/ ). But there are others as well:

          pre-fix (for prix-fixe)
          eggclair (for eclair)

don't feel too bad, or at least feel bad in good company... at a recent awards ceremony for the Dean's and President's Scholars at my college, after the presentation the screen at the front of the auditorium displayed "SJSU Honor's Convocation." Let's hope the slide typist wasn't also an honoree. :P
